The purpose of this course is to develop advanced clinical nurse practitioners who will be able to utilize and apply their cognitive skills to ensure the safety of the surgical patient. Furthermore, the course aims to assist the candidates to function effectively as independent advanced clinical nurse practitioners and members of the multi-disciplinary health care team in the field of Operating Theatre Nursing Science. The students will be able to care for the patient undergoing various methods of anesthesia. The principles of asepsis and microbiology will be emphasized to create greater awareness in ensuring a safe environment for the surgical patient. It also addresses ethical, moral, and legal issues as well as specific considerations for various types of procedures.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Take charge of a particular individual patient during the Perioperative period.
Ensure patient safety on a moral and physical level in the respect of the person and his/her rights.
Master hospital hygiene, asepsis, and the different methods of disinfection and sterilization.
Exhibit competence in all roles of the Perioperative nurse by performing safe, skilled technical practice.
Act competently as a circulating nurse and a scrub nurse in the basic techniques of the main specialties of surgery.
Identify and use strategies to assist the perioperative patient during the administration of anesthesia.
Manipulate skillfully and maintain the main instruments and devices used in the Operating Theatre.
Take part in the administration and organization of an Operating Theatre and in the management of a multidisciplinary team.
Display legal and ethical behavior in the practice of technical skills.
Demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply and evaluate knowledge of anatomy.
Utilize effective communication skills while interacting with all members of the healthcare team, patients and their families, faculty, and other groups in the health care setting.
