“4000 Plus”: A Landmark in Transforming Nursing Education in Sri Lanka and Beyond

In a historic and proud moment for the healthcare and education sectors of Sri Lanka, the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) has surpassed a transformative milestone: graduating over 4,000 government nurses with internationally recognized qualifications, including Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing. This significant achievement now represents 10% of the entire national nursing workforce and serves as a powerful testament to IIHS’s unwavering commitment to social impact and healthcare advancement as a social entrepreneurial institution.
Redefining the Nursing Profession
Since its inception, IIHS has worked with a clear vision: to redefine the landscape of nursing education and elevate the status of nurses through globally relevant academic opportunities. In 2010, IIHS made history by introducing Sri Lanka’s first international top-up Bachelor of Nursing program. This was not just an academic milestone—it was a paradigm shift that redefined how nurses were perceived and valued within both the healthcare and education systems in the country. Prior to this initiative, limited pathways existed for Sri Lankan nurses to access international higher education. By bridging this gap, IIHS sparked a national movement toward academic and professional growth for nurses.
The effects of this pioneering effort have been profound. Today, over 20 institutions across Sri Lanka have adopted and offer top-up Bachelor’s degree programs in nursing, reflecting the nationwide momentum that IIHS has helped create. Particularly within the private education sector, IIHS has played a foundational role in redefining the structure of nursing education, proving that when nurses are academically empowered and professionally respected, the entire healthcare ecosystem benefits.
With over 15 years of sustained effort, IIHS has not only elevated the quality of nursing care in Sri Lanka but has also extended its impact to neighboring regions such as the Maldives. The institute has consistently produced nurses trained to meet international healthcare standards, with an emphasis on clinical practice, leadership development, and global exposure. These professionals are equipped to respond to both local and international challenges in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
Recognized today as the No. 1 healthcare training hub in South Asia, IIHS continues to expand its reach and impact by supporting the growth of nursing professionals from Sri Lanka and regional countries such as India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Maldives. The institute’s core mission remains centered on adding value, dignity, and academic excellence to the noble profession of nursing.
This success has been fueled by IIHS’s strong academic partnerships with globally reputed universities. Collaborations with institutions such as Open University Malaysia (OUM), Coventry University in the UK, and the University of Surrey have enabled IIHS to offer globally benchmarked curricula and internationally recognized degrees. OUM, known for its accessible and high-quality education, has been a long-standing partner. Coventry University, ranked among the top 550 in the QS World University Rankings, and the University of Surrey, ranked 242 globally, have added academic rigor, global research perspectives, and innovation to the programs offered at IIHS.
Further reinforcing its global vision, approximately 15% of IIHS graduates have successfully migrated and are contributing to international healthcare systems across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. These nurses serve not only as healthcare professionals but also as ambassadors of Sri Lankan talent, adaptability, and resilience—thriving in diverse and high-demand environments around the world. This international footprint reflects IIHS’s long-term goal of creating globally competent professionals while uplifting human capital through quality education.
To honor the monumental “4000 Plus” milestone, IIHS held a prestigious national ceremony. Hon. Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Health & Mass Media, and Most Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero, Chancellor of the University of Colombo, graced the occasion. They jointly presented a token of appreciation to Dr. Nihal De Silva, Co-Founder and Chancellor of IIHS, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to nursing education and national healthcare development.
Yet, for IIHS, this achievement is not an endpoint but a powerful launchpad for the future. With dedication and purpose, the institute remains committed to expanding access to international-quality nursing education, empowering more professionals through innovative and inclusive learning, advocating for the professional recognition of nurses, and strengthening healthcare systems across Sri Lanka and South Asia.
“4000 Plus” is far more than a number. It symbolizes a mission, a movement, and a milestone that embodies the power of purpose-driven education. It reflects what is possible when visionary leadership, dedication, and innovation come together to transform not only individuals but also an entire profession—and by extension, an entire nation.
